- You position the crop frame yourself, so head height depends on your own eye rather than a measurement. Head size outside the permitted band is one of the most common rejection reasons.
- It formats the photo; it does not tell you whether the source photo passes on lighting, shadow, background uniformity, expression or resolution.
- The photo is uploaded to their server for processing, even though the tool is free.
- No compliance report, so nothing to show if an application is questioned.
The rule that decides it for US applications
The US State Department's published photo requirements tell applicants not to manipulate a photo with computer software, phone apps, filters or artificial intelligence, which covers background replacement and skin smoothing. Widespread reporting puts the tightening of this from January 2026, though that date is not stated on the requirements page itself. Other authorities are moving the same way.

Yes, genuinely free, with no account or watermark. It crops and lays out your photo for printing. What it does not do is measure whether the photo passes: head height, background uniformity, shadow, expression and resolution are left to your judgement.
