What is a Hong Kong SAR Passport photo?

A Hong Kong SAR passport photo is 40×50 mm — taller than the international standard — with the chin-to-crown at 32–36 mm on a plain white background. The Immigration Department's online and app routes alternatively accept camera photos of at least 1200×1600 pixels up to 5 MB.

Hong Kong's distinctive rule is the absolute ban on head dress — no coverings of any kind, one of the strictest positions worldwide — along with no frames across the eyes and no flash reflection. The HKID card, by contrast, involves no submitted photo at all: it is captured live at registration.

Applications through GovHK or the ImmD mobile app also accept camera photos of at least 1200×1600 pixels (up to 5 MB) or a scan of the 40×50 mm print. This page checks your framing against the ImmD geometry and delivers the exact 40×50 mm print sheet plus a high-resolution digital file.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Hong Kong passport photo?

40 mm wide by 50 mm high in print, with the head (chin to crown) at 32–36 mm on a plain white background. The ImmD's online route alternatively accepts a camera photo of at least 1200×1600 pixels.

Are head coverings allowed?

No — the ImmD requires no head dress at all, one of the strictest rules worldwide. Hair must be clear of the eyes and eyebrows, and there must be no flash reflection on the face.

Is the HKID card photo the same?

No — the Hong Kong identity card photo is captured live at the registration office, so there's nothing to submit. This spec is for the HKSAR passport.

Glasses?

Permitted only if the frames don't cross the eyes and there's no reflection on the lenses. Tinted lenses are not acceptable.

Compliance, honestly

  • We validate your photo against the official rules — we never retouch your face, and we only normalize the background where the destination country permits it.
  • Every requirement is cited from official government sources, with the verification date shown on the page.
  • You get a measured report, not a guarantee — final acceptance always rests with the issuing authority.
