MEETS SPEC — ESTIMATED

Checked against the official specification — source cited on every document.

Worth knowing: Retouched photos — smoothed skin, replaced backgrounds, AI enhancement — are grounds for rejection under the Korean spec. If your background isn't a clean white, the honest fix is retaking the photo against a white wall, not editing it. Our checker tells you which it is.

What is a South Korea Passport photo?

A South Korean passport photo is a 35×45 mm colour photograph on a uniform white background with no border, with the head — measured from the crown excluding hair, down to the chin — between 32 and 36 mm. For online passport reissue through Government24, the digital file is 413×531 pixels (395–431 × 507–550 accepted) as a JPG under 500 KB.

Korea explicitly prohibits retouching: background replacement, skin smoothing and any digital beautification are rejection grounds. Tinted, coloured and circle contact lenses are banned, and glasses must not reflect or cover the eyes. A compliant unedited photo is the only reliable route — which is exactly what a measuring tool produces and a beautifying app does not.

Korea is one of the few countries that explicitly prohibits retouching and background replacement, which photo apps routinely do. This tool never edits your photo: it measures the head band, background and dimensions in your browser, and delivers the file at the accepted size.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Korean passport photo requirements?

35×45 mm, taken within 6 months, uniform white background with no border, neutral expression, both eyes open, ears not required to show but hair must be off the face. Head height (crown excluding hair, to chin) 32–36 mm. Digital: 413×531 px recommended, JPG, up to 500 KB.

Can I apply for a Korean passport online with my own photo?

Passport reissue can be done online via Government24 with a compliant uploaded photo. First-time applications are made in person, but bring printed photos that meet the same spec — our sheet gives you four 35×45 mm copies.

Are coloured or circle contact lenses allowed?

No — tinted, coloured and circle lenses are all banned. Glasses are permitted only if the frames don't cover the eyes and there is no reflection.

Why was my photo rejected for retouching?

Korean examiners reject photos with visible editing: background replacement, skin smoothing, brightness manipulation of the face. Many photo apps apply these silently. PassportClerk applies no beautification of any kind — what you upload is what gets measured and delivered.

Compliance, honestly

  • We validate your photo against the official rules — we never retouch your face, and we only normalize the background where the destination country permits it.
  • Every requirement is cited from official government sources, with the verification date shown on the page.
  • You get a measured report, not a guarantee — final acceptance always rests with the issuing authority.
