UK visa photo, checked against the gov.uk digital rules

UK visa and immigration applications use a digital photo: a portrait-orientation JPG of at least 600×750 pixels, between 50 KB and 6 MB, against a plain light-coloured background with clear contrast. Your head, shoulders and upper body should be in frame, facing forward with a neutral expression.

What is a UK Visa & Immigration Photo photo?

A UK visa photo is a digital photograph uploaded with visa and immigration applications: portrait orientation, at least 600×750 pixels, between 50 KB and 6 MB, on a plain light-coloured background with clear contrast. The frame shows head, shoulders and upper body, facing forward with a neutral expression.

Unlike UK passport photos, glasses are not allowed unless medically necessary — the single most common trip-up for applicants reusing a passport photo. Photos taken at home against a plain wall are explicitly acceptable, provided the lighting is even and nothing casts shadows on the background.

Unlike the UK passport photo, glasses are not allowed in visa photos unless you can't remove them for medical reasons. This page checks your framing, background and file constraints in the browser, then delivers a compliant file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UK visa photo the same as the UK passport photo?

No. Both are digital-first with a plain light background, but the visa guidance bans glasses (the passport allows them without glare), and the visa spec is 600×750 px minimum at 50 KB–6 MB. If you're applying for both, take the photo without glasses so it works for either.

What background do I need?

A plain, light-coloured background — cream or light grey work well — with clear contrast against your head and no shadows. It doesn't need to be pure white; it needs to be even.

Can I take the photo myself at home?

Yes — the guidance explicitly allows photos taken at home against a plain wall. Stand about 1.5 m from the camera, use even daylight, and hold the phone at eye level. The live checker tells you if the framing or lighting misses.

What about the eVisa / UKVI account photo?

The UKVI ID Check app captures its own biometric photo during identity verification — you don't upload one. The uploaded 600×750 photo applies to standard visa applications where the form asks for a digital photo.

Head coverings?

Allowed for religious or medical reasons only, with your face visible from chin to forehead. No face coverings of any kind.

Compliance, honestly

  • We validate your photo against the official rules — we never retouch your face, and we only normalize the background where the destination country permits it.
  • Every requirement is cited from official government sources, with the verification date shown on the page.
  • You get a measured report, not a guarantee — final acceptance always rests with the issuing authority.
